A Wanaka fine arts student has received a top prize from the University of Auckland for her work.
Hannah Davey, a first-year student at the university's Elam School of Fine Art, was named winner of the 2018 Simon Devitt Prize for Photography this week.
The prize is awarded for the most compelling photograph taken by a full-time student from the university's Faculty of Creative Arts and Industries.
Ms Davey's image, entitled The Rising, beat dozens of other entries, winning her a trophy, $1000 and a Canon camera.
This image was taken in her home town of Wanaka, using a friend as a model.
"The theme was `Mythical' and with my image I juxtaposed strong earthy elements and dark colours, with bright light, to portray a half-beast, half-human figure who is struggling, both literally and metaphorically. I was exploring making the invisible visible. Specifically, internal struggles and what's going on in your mind," Ms Davey said.
Ms Davey said she hoped to become a fashion photographer after completing her degree.
