Carmen Burgi is a contemporary jeweller and object maker from Central Otago. She specialises in handcrafted one-of-a-kind pieces. She works largely in silver, semi-precious stones, and pearls, but sometimes makes use of other materials such as mild steel and resin.
Carmen's work often references the sea or land and oscillates between light and dark. She specialises in handcrafted one-of-a-kind pieces. Some pieces may be blackened using traditional oxidising methods.
"Some pieces call to me to be white, ethereal, shimmering, others, dark, edgy, decay-like.
I usually have a firm idea of how I want a collection or piece to 'feel', but that may evolve in the workshop as decisions are made during the process. Sometimes, text, quotes, phrases inspire a train of thought, images, and designs.
These, I try to transpose to metal."
